From the team that brought blockbuster mobile and PC title Onmyoji to life comes a brand new cross-platform RPG, Onmyoji: The World. Its cinematic trailer was revealed for the first time worldwide at this year’s NetEase Connect 2021.
Embark upon a thrilling new adventure through Japanese folklore in Onmyoji: The World, where you’ll play as an onmyoji–a practitioner of a system of science, divination, magic, and more known as onmyōdō, heavily inspired by the Chinese philosophies of yin and yang and wǔxíng. Together, you’ll conjure spirits known as shikigami, to harness the powers of onmyōdō and save a beautiful and cruel world.
The new trailer illustrates a remarkably detailed kabuki opera performance of Yorimitsu Minamoto facing the king of demons, Shuten Doji. At the climax of the performance, the pluck of a shamisen marks the beginning of an assault on the city.
What appears to be several protagonist characters fend off a horde of puppet-like enemies in a bombastic and fluid combat sequence. The trailer ends with an unnamed character with long black hair from the Minamoto clan going up against the woman who strummed the shamisen.
While the trailer doesn’t name several of its starring characters, renowned voice actor Kaji Yuki will return in Onmyoji: The World, reprising his role as Hoshikuma Doji. Kaji has also starred in other video games and anime such as Final Fantasy XIII as Hope Estheim and Attack on Titan as Eren Jaeger.
Onmyoji: The World takes place during the Heian-Kyo period and its collapse. Now, the city known as Minamoto is bustling with life during its celebration of the Minamoto Festival. Behind closed doors, a rivalry is brewing, and the possibilities of war are bubbling back to the surface. In one of its storylines, detailed in its reveal trailer, it’ll be up to you to continue the legacy of the descendants of the Minamoto clan and Mt. Ōe.
Become immersed in the tales of love, tragedy, terror, and justice in this exciting new RPG world. Explore a deep and rich world of Japanese folklore, including storylines inspired by what are now some of modern-day’s Kyoto’s famed legends, “The Tale of Genji” and “The Demon of Ōeyama.”
Onmyoji: The World is a spinoff of the acclaimed online game Onmyoji. Since its 2016 launch, Onmyoji has seen millions of downloads across the globe. Onmyoji has also received Google Play Best of the Year and Facebook Game of the Year awards over its lifetime.
Returning Onmyoji players can expect Onmoyji’s characteristic Japanese aesthetic once again, but Onmyoji: The World aims to be even more revolutionary in its graphics and storytelling. Players can also expect smooth cross-platform gameplay and social experiences.
